A four-month investigation by the Regina Police Service Crime Reduction Team (CRT) has resulted in nine people being charged with more arrests expected. Six of the charged persons are youths.
The investigation began in August of this year, after officers learned of activities related to illegal firearms transfers originating in Regina.
Several rural RCMP detachments, the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team (STRT) and the Provincial Chief Firearms Office all assisted in the investigation which spanned the province including: the City of Regina, northern Saskatchewan and communities in the province’s south east.
The investigation revealed multiple unauthorized transfers of firearms dating back to June of 2023. To date, three adults and six youth have been arrested.
Among those charged is 38 year-old Shawn Ryan KAKAKAWAY. He is charged with:
- Conspiracy to Commit and Indictable Offence [CC 465(1)(C)];
- Weapons Trafficking [CC 99]; and
- 2 x Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking [CC 100(1)].
Twenty-two year-old Rueban NAHBEXIE is also charged with:
- Possession of a Prohibited Firearm Obtained by Crime [CC 96(1)];and
- 2 x Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order [CC 117.01(1)]
More arrests and charges are expected as the investigation continues.
