The Regina Police Service spring traffic initiative, Project SPEED, is back for another year.
Over the course of the next several weeks, RPS will be increasing enforcement and public education to put the brakes on speeding and excess vehicle noise on Regina roadways.
Every spring, the Regina Police Service notes a marked increase in dangerous driving actions including speeding, stunting and street racing. The Traffic Safety Unit also receives an increase in traffic complaints from citizens concerned about dangerous driving in their neighbourhoods.
“After a long winter, people are anxious and excited for spring. We understand that. We are too,” said Sgt. Mark Verbeek of the RPS Traffic Safety Unit. “Spring brings better driving conditions, more daylight and a sense of energy to everyone. However, that often results in vehicles travelling at higher speeds, street racing and excess vehicle noise in our community. We are committed to reducing those driving behaviors in hopes of increasing public safety.”
Project SPEED (Spring Public Education & Enforcement Drive) will be carried out by members of the Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS). Last year, the month-long focus resulted in 1,517 SOTI’s (Summary Offence Ticket Information) aka: tickets issued for various traffic offences:
- 1183 speeding tickets
- 26 distracted driving tickets
- 46 vehicle equipment violations
- 17 suspended drivers
- 245 other traffic offences
Police also impounded 27 vehicles and handed out 45 Vehicle Inspection tickets.
The Project SPEED initiative will run throughout the months of April and May, but residents can expect continued enforcement on these, and other traffic violations throughout the summer months as well.
