I want to leave an abusive situation, but I don’t want to leave my pet. What can I do?
Threats of harm or cruelty to animals may be used to try and prevent victims from leaving abusive situations. Animals often become part of a family and victims may be hesitant to leave home as they fear that something bad might happen to their cherished pet. Individuals leaving abusive situations can:
