The Regina Police Service is aware of public concerns regarding the use of electric bicycles
(e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) throughout the community. Concerns raised include: underage youth operating them, unsafe speeds, riding on sidewalks, failure to follow traffic rules and near-miss incidents involving pedestrians and motorists.
We are reminding the public, including parents and young riders, about the importance of following regulations and practicing safe riding habits to ensure everyone is sharing our public spaces safely.
Know the Rules:
- According to provincial law, the minimum age to operate an e-bike or e-scooter is 14 years-old .
- Only one rider is permitted on an e-bike or e-scooter at a time.
- Speed restrictions:
- E-bike: follow the posted speed limits on roadways
- E-scooter: maximum 24 km/h on roadways; 15 km/h on pathways
- Do not ride on sidewalks. E-bikes and e-scooters are allowed to ride on multi-use pathways, bike lanes and roadways. E-scooters cannot be operated on roadways where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h.
- Riders must follow all traffic signals, signs and road markings.
Rider Safety:
- Protect Yourself: Wear an approved bicycle helmet and clothing that covers your skin.
- Stay Visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing. Use lights and reflectors, especially at night.
- Stay Alert: Keep both hands on the handlebars. Avoid distractions like using a phone or wearing headphones. Do not ride while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Watch Your Surroundings: Be aware of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Watch for hazards such as potholes.
- Follow the Rules of the Road: Riders are not permitted on sidewalks. They must follow all traffic signals, signs and road markings. Make sure to shoulder check when switching lanes.
- Make Yourself Known: Use a bell or say “on your left” when passing pedestrians from behind.
