Electric scooters (e-scooters) and power-assisted bicycles with pedals (e-bikes) are becoming a popular way to get around quickly and conveniently. Whether you’re commuting, running errands or enjoying a ride, it’s important to understand the rules and how to operate these devices safely.
Know the Rules
According to provincial law, the minimum age to operate an e-bike is 14 years-old and 16 years-old to operate an e-scooter.
Note: the minimum age to rent an e-scooter through Regina’s Shared E-Scooter Program is 16 years-old.
Only one rider is permitted on an e-bike or e-scooter at a time.
Speed restrictions
E-bike: follow the posted speed limits on roadways
E-scooter: maximum 24 km/h on roadways; 15 km/h on pathways
E-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed on sidewalks.
E-bikes and e-scooters are allowed on multi-use pathways, bike lanes and roadways. E-scooters cannot be operated on roadways where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h.
Riders must follow all traffic signals, signs and road markings.
E-dirtbikes: Any gas-powered cycles, electric bicycles larger than 500 watts or electric bicycles without pedals are considered motorcycles. All motorcycle licensing requirements and equipment standards apply.
Rider Safety
- Protect Yourself: Wear an approved bicycle helmet and clothing that covers your skin.
- Stay Visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing. Use lights and reflectors, especially at night.
- Stay Alert: Keep both hands on the handlebars. Avoid distractions like using a phone or wearing headphones. Do not ride while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Watch Your Surroundings: Be aware of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Watch for hazards like uneven payment.
- Follow the Rules of the Road: Riders are not permitted on sidewalks. They must follow all traffic signals, signs and road markings. Make sure to shoulder check when switching lanes.
- Make Yourself Known: Use a bell or call out when passing pedestrians from behind.
