A member of the public, two police officers and a Police Service Dog (PSD) are recovering after they were assaulted with bear spray earlier today, Friday, April 25, 2025.
Officers were called to a residence in the 1200 block of Elphinstone Street shortly before 11:00 a.m., for a report of a weapons offence involving bear spray. When police arrived, they located an adult male victim who had just been bear sprayed. The victim was taken to hospital by EMS to be treated for injuries.
Officers located the male suspect a short distance away. When the suspect saw the officers approaching, he immediately fled the area. Officers followed him on foot for a short distance before the suspect assaulted one of the officers with the bear spray.
The suspect then ran to a front yard of a residence in the 1200 block of McTavish Street where officers, including members of the Canine Unit, attempted to arrest him. During the arrest, a second officer and a Police Service Dog were assaulted with the bear spray. Despite this, the PSD was able to apprehend the suspect. During the apprehension the PSD bit the suspect. The suspect was taken by EMS to hospital to be treated for injuries that resulted from the contact with the PSD.
Both police officers and the PSD were treated for injuries that resulted from the bear spray assault.
As a result of this investigation, 20 year-old Jayden SUNSHINE-WAPAN, is charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon [CC 267(A)];
- 2 x Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon [CC270.01(1)(A)];
- Injuring a Law Enforcement Animal [CC 445.01(1)[;
- Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest [CC 270 (1)(B)];
- Resist Arrest [CC 129(A)];
- Possession of a Weapon [CC 88]; and
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon [CC 90].
SUNSHINE-WAPAN will make his first appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court on April 28 at 9:30 a.m.
