Safety in school zones is a shared responsibility, and drivers play a critical role in ensuring that students and pedestrians are protected. With the snow and cold weather upon us, there’s been an increase in drivers disobeying signage, putting children and families at risk. The Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit is committed to increasing presence over the coming weeks in school zones to monitor traffic and driver behavior, and hand out tickets when necessary. The Regina Police Service reminds motorists about critical safety rules:
No picking up or dropping off in no parking areas within school zones
No Parking zones are clearly marked to prevent congestion and ensure a safe flow of traffic. Stopping in these areas, even briefly, creates hazards for children and other road users. It is illegal to pick up or drop off passengers in no parking zones, and violators can face fines. There are instances, especially in recent winter conditions, where drivers will leave their vehicle in a no parking zone, while it is running in a designated exhaust-free zone, to retrieve their children. These actions put young lives at risk.
Backing up in intersections is illegal and dangerous
Reversing in an intersection not only disrupts traffic flow but also increases the risk of collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles. Drivers are reminded that intersections are high-visibility areas where safe, predictable driving is essential. Violating this law could endanger everyone in the vicinity. Doing this near school zones is especially concerning as many young pedestrians face added risk.
Pedestrians have the right of way
Pedestrians, especially children, are the most vulnerable users of the road. Drivers must remain vigilant and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and all intersections. Slowing down, coming to a full stop when required, and maintaining eye contact with pedestrians can save lives.
Tips for drivers in school zones
- School Zone speed is 30 km/h; 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Always obey posted speed limits and signage. Pay attention to crossing lights and Safety Patrollers.
- Use designated pick-up and drop-off areas. Do not park in ‘no stopping’ zones, even briefly to pick up or drop off children.
- Avoid distractions, including mobile devices.
- Stay alert for children who may suddenly cross the road.
“School zones are designed with safety as the top priority,” says Sgt. Shannon Gordon of the Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit. “By following these rules, we can work together to prevent accidents and ensure our children can get to and from school safely.”
The Regina Police Service thanks motorists for their attention to this matter.
