Three youths have been charged after an incident at a Regina high school yesterday afternoon.
At approximately 2:25 p.m., on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023, police were dispatched to a report of a weapons offence at a high school in the 200 block of Argyle Street North. Early information provided to police stated that an individual had sprayed bear mace at students. Both School Resource Officers and Patrol Officers were dispatched to the school and the school was placed in secure-the-building mode.
Through investigation, it was determined an altercation took place outside on school grounds involving multiple male youths. It began with a 15 year-old male spraying bear mace at two male youths (aged 14 and 16). The 15 year-old suspect then left the area on foot.
The 16 year-old male who was sprayed entered the school. The 14 year-old male who was sprayed then engaged in an altercation with two different males who were nearby. The 14 year-old male assaulted a male victim with a bladed weapon before going into the school. Investigation determined the two altercations are connected. EMS arrived to the location and treated all victims on scene.
School Resource Officers located the 14 year-old male inside a classroom in the school and he was taken into police custody. In a search, following the arrest, police recovered a bladed weapon in the male’s backpack.
School Resource Officers located the 16 year-old male outside of the school and he was taken into police custody without incident. In a search, following the arrest, it was determined the male was also in possession of a bladed weapon.
The 15 year-old male suspect, wanted for the initial bear spray incident, was located at a residence by Patrol officers and was taken into custody without incident. Once all involved parties were in police custody, secure-the-building was lifted.
A 14 year-old male youth, who cannot be named in accordance with provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with:
- Assault With A Weapon [CC 267 (A)]; and
- Possession of a Weapon [CC 88].
A 15 year-old male youth, who cannot be named in accordance with provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with:
- 2 X Assault With A Weapon [CC 267 (A)]; and
- Possession of A Weapon [CC 88].
A 16 year-old male youth, who cannot be named in accordance with provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with:
- Assault [CC 266];
- Possession of a Weapon [CC 88];
- Carrying Concealed Weapon [CC 90]; and
- Theft Under $5000 [CC 334 (B)].
All three male youths made their first appearances on these charges in Regina Provincial Youth Court this morning (Thursday, October 5, 2023) at 9:30 a.m.
“Secure the Building” is defined as: a situation where it is believed a threat is currently outside the building resulting in the decision to secure the school whereby all outside doors will be locked to secure the building. Each exterior door is to be monitored by designated school staff until Secure the Building mode has been lifted. Entry and exit of the building will be at the front doors only and are to be monitored by police and school administration. Regular interior school activities continue in a controlled manner.
