The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon, or CEW, commonly known as a Taser, on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 9:02 p.m., members of the Regina Police Service were dispatched to a disturbance on Flamingo Crescent, for a report of a thirty one year-old male with a weapon acting erratically. Upon arrival, the male charged at the police vehicle with the weapon. The male eventually dropped the weapon and charged at officers again. One of the officers deployed his CEW in an attempt stop the male from attacking the officers. The CEW deployment was unsuccessful, but the male was eventually safely taken into custody. Emergency Medical Services assessed and cleared the male who had no injuries.
This matter is still under investigation and charges are pending.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee, which is a committee within the Service. All CEW deployments are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission, which is an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
