A seventeen year-old male youth is facing weapons and assault charges after an incident involving bear spray early this morning (Friday).
On April 29, 2022, at about 3:40 a.m., an officer operating an unmarked unit was on proactive patrol in North Central Regina when he noted three males who were acting suspiciously, cutting through parking lots and flashing gang signs. The officer was parked in the 2900 block of Dewdney Avenue when the group came toward him. One male pointed a canister of bear spray at the officer. The officer exited his vehicle and challenged the males: two ran away, but the male with the bear spray was taken into custody without further incident. Further investigation led to charges.
The identity of the seventeen year-old cannot be released in keeping with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with:
- Assault Peace Officer while Threatening to use a Weapon, s. 270.01(1)(a) CC;
- Possession of a Weapon for the Purpose of Committing an Offence, s. 88 CC;
- Carrying Concealed Weapon (bear spray), s. 90 CC; and
- Breach of Undertaking, s. 145(5)(a) CC.
The accused made his first court appearance on these charges in Youth Court today, Friday, April 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
