Whether you are staying in the city or heading out on the highway to celebrate Thanksgiving in a COVID-responsible way this long weekend, the Regina Police Service is reminding you that “Safety doesn’t happen by accident.”
Beginning Friday, Oct. 9, we are joining police services across the country for Operation Impact 2020 – an annual campaign to remind motorists of the impact they have on the safety of themselves and others.
The 2018 Saskatchewan Traffic Collisions Report, published by SGI, shows that 129 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2018 and 4,229 people were injured. There were 28,975 reported collisions in 2018.
This long weekend, RPS members will be doing everything we can do ensure that local roadways are as safe as possible, but everyone has a role to play. As a driver, a passenger, or even a pedestrian – you can have an impact too.
• Don’t drive impaired, and that includes fatigue. There are many alternatives. Call for a ride from a taxi, a friend or family and be sure you are well-rested, especially after tackling a plate full of turkey.
• Aggressive and distracted driving also top the list of dangerous behaviors. Give yourself extra time to get to where you are going and only use hands-free options if you need to take or make a call.
• Finally, always make sure you and your children are wearing seatbelts and safely restrained.
