The Regina Police Service Communications Centre is urging the public to call 911 if they suspect someone is experiencing an overdose.
Over the past 24 hours, RPS Communications Officers have received over 50 reports of potential overdoses. Many of these calls are being made to the non-emergent administration line, 306-777-6500 and should be coming through 911.
Calling the non-emergent line will result in delays in getting EMS and medical assistance to those who may need it.
When you call 911, the Regina Police Service Communications Centre receives the calls and forwards them to the appropriate first responder: EMS, Regina Fire and Protective Servies or Police.
“If you are driving by and see someone who may be in distress, but are unable to stop, call 911,” explains Shannon Walter, Manager of the Regina Police Service Communications Centre. “We are finding that because people aren’t sure, they are calling the non-emergent line.”
Don’t hesitate to call 911 if you feel someone may be in medical distress. RPS Communications Officers are highly-trained in information gathering and triaging calls for service to the appropriate first responder. An overdose is a medical emergency. We are urging the public to always call 911 if they suspect someone is experiencing an overdose.
