An adult male is facing assault charges following a traffic stop on April 15, 2026.
Shortly after 5:00 p.m. an officer patrolling in the area of Avonhurst Drive observed a vehicle with an improperly secured licence plate and a missing rear bumper – both violations of the Traffic Safety Act. The officer performed a traffic stop and the driver of the vehicle pulled into a parking lot.
Before the officer could approach, the suspect driver exited his vehicle and began to walk towards officers, shouting and acting aggressively. The suspect ignored repeated commands by officers to return to his vehicle and provide identification. He continued to act aggressively as he approached the officers.
Officers attempted to bring him in to custody and a struggle ensued. During the arrest, the suspect fell to the ground and a knife fell from his pocket. Additional officers arrived on scene and, together, they were able to bring the suspect into custody without further incident.
As a result of the investigation, 65 year-old Peter COOTE is charged with offences under the Traffic Safety Act, in addition to the following criminal charges:
• Assault a Peace Officer [CC 270.01(1)(A)]; and
• Resist Arrest [CC 129(A)].
Court Information #: 991336005
COOTE will make his first appearance on these charges on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 in Regina Provincial Court.
