A 29 year-old Regina male is facing assault charges after an incident earlier today, August 14, 2024. At approximately 10:35 a.m., police were conducting a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Dorothy Street on an individual who had outstanding warrants. As police approached the vehicle, the suspect exited with a dog on a leash and continued to command his dog to attack officers and let go of the leash. The suspect then began to flee northbound.
As an RPS K9 officer and Police Service dog were attempting to apprehend the suspect, the suspect commanded his dog to attack again. As a result, the dog made contact with the K9 dog in the neck and shoulder area. Due to the aggressive nature of the dog and to protect from further injury, OC spray was deployed on the dog but did not break up the altercation. The officer then deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), which was successful in breaking up the altercation.
During the arrest, the arresting officer sustained a broken wrist. The suspects’ dog sustained non-life threatening injuries and was seized by Animal Control. The RPS K9 dog was also treated for non-life threatening injuries.
As a result of this arrest, 29 year-old Nickolas VELIKAS, is arrested and charged with:
- Assault of a Police Officer with a Weapon [CC 270.01(1)(A)] X2;
- Resisting a Peace Officer [CC 129(A)]; and
