At approximately 1:50 a.m., Sunday morning a member of the RPS Canine Unit was patrolling in the area of 6th Avenue East and Park Street when he observed fresh tire tracks next to an opening in a fence surrounding a commercial compound.
The officer radioed the Air Support Unit (ASU) to further investigate from above. Within minutes, the ASU Officer confirmed, via thermal imaging, that there was a recently driven vehicle and two people inside the compound who appeared to be hiding behind a trailer.
The Canine team (Police Service Dog and Police Officer), along with two Patrol Officers, made their way towards the two suspects, who had now cut a hole in a back fence and had climbed through. This was all observed by the Tactical Flight Officer and relayed to officers on the ground.
The suspects were arrested without incident. The PSD did not make contact with either suspect. Further investigation revealed the suspects had a truck and trailer in the compound a truck loaded with a large amount of lumber. The truck was reported stolen out of Alberta. They were also in possession of break and enter tools.
As a result of this investigation, two adult males were arrested and charged.
