There is nothing quite like a warm summer breeze blowing through an open window or the temptation to leave the door unlocked in case you run outside one last time before bed time. However, if they are left open/unlocked, there is a chance you could be victimized.
Break and Enters and Thefts are on the rise throughout our city and the Regina Police Service is urging residents to take extra care in locking their doors and securing their valuables.
Over the past two months (May 1, 2023 – June 27, 2023) RPS recorded the following statistics:
- 80 Break and Enters to Residences, Garages and Sheds
- 55 per cent were unlocked and 45 per cent were unsecured (problems with a lock etc.)
- Common items taken include sport equipment, high-end tools and technology like laptops.
- 117 Theft from Auto
- 97 per cent were unlocked and three per cent were unsecured (windows left open etc.)
- Common items taken are wallets and garage door openers, which lead to garage and home break-ins.
In addition to stolen property, there is the very real threat to personal safety. A recent case reported to police involved a suspect gaining entry to a home through an unlocked door and assaulting the homeowners in the middle of the night. The suspect was arrested and charged with Break & Enter & Commit Assault.
Regina Police Service Crime Analysts track all reported incidents in our city. This information is shared with frontline officers and their efforts are directed to areas of concern to provide proactive policing and deter criminals by being present, when they are able.
The Regina Police Service understands it is a busy time of year and therefore it is easier to forget to lock up, but it takes the efforts of all of us to prevent crime in our community.
