The Regina Police Service is asking for information from the public that may assist in an investigation into a sexual assault that happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. A female victim was sexually assaulted by a male, unknown to her, who offered to give her a ride home from Dewdney Avenue.
On Saturday, September 17, 2022 at approximately 2:40 a.m. police received a report of a sexual assault. Investigation revealed that the victim was leaving a business in the 2200 block of Dewdney Avenue and approached the line of taxis and Ubers parked outside on the street. The victim got in a vehicle and gave her destination address. After a few minutes, the driver of the vehicle began to travel in a different direction from the address and continued to travel to the edge of the city. It’s believed the suspect driver stopped the vehicle near Pinkie Road. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim. He then drove her to the address she originally provided and dropped her off. At this point in the investigation, it appears as if the vehicle was not a licensed cab or ride share vehicle.
The Regina Police Service is issuing this advisory to assist in the investigation and we commend the victim for having the courage to report this crime. Police are also issuing this information to caution those who take taxis or use ride sharing options. If you are getting into an unknown vehicle, police encourage you to:
• Ensure the vehicle has a visible meter that is tracking the cost of the ride.
• Ask the driver for credentials or identification associated with their business.
• When possible, “book” the ride on an app or by phone, and confirm your name with the driver before getting in the vehicle.
• Make a safety plan if you are travelling alone (Example: notify someone of your expected arrival.
• Always report suspicious vehicles or drivers to police.
This investigation is ongoing. Police may release additional information if it’s determined such details would not be detrimental to the investigation. Anyone with information that could assist police in this sexual assault investigation is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
