Investigation into a stolen SUV on the weekend had an immediate impact on public safety, by taking a loaded firearm off the street, thanks to the work of members of the Regina Police Service Stolen Auto Unit, assisted by Patrol and Communications.
On August 8, 2022, the Regina Police Service received a report of a stolen vehicle: a white, 2022 Volkswagen Taos SUV, taken from a garage in the 800 block of MacNiven Avenue. The night of Saturday, August 27th, police were in the area of 7th Avenue and Albert Street, when they spotted a white Taos SUV travelling north-bound on Albert Street. Officers kept the vehicle in sight until it pulled into a parking lot in the 400 block of Broad Street North. The female driver and a male passenger exited the vehicle and went into a business. At about 10:50 p.m., police entered the premises and took the two individuals into custody without incident. The vehicle was searched, turning up a backpack, which contained a loaded, sawed-off .22-calibre semi-automatic rifle and a can of bear spray. There was also a license plate, which was confirmed to be stolen. Both occupants of the vehicle were also in violation of court-ordered conditions.
Twenty-three year-old Taylor Chase GENAILLE (female) and 36 year-old Jamal Delmar MCARTHUR (male), both of Regina, are jointly charged with:
– Possession of stolen property (vehicle) over $5,000, s. 355(a) CC;
– Possession of a weapon (bear spray) for a purpose dangerous to public peace, s. 88 CC;
– Possession of stolen property (license plate) under $5,000, s. 355(b) CC;
– Careless use of a firearm, s. 86(1) CC;
– Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, s. 94(1) CC; and
– Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, s. 95(1)(a) CC.
MCARTHUR is also charged with:
– Possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order, s. 117.01(1) CC;
– Possession of ammunition contrary to prohibition order, s. 117.01(1) CC; and
– Breach of probation, s. 733.1(1) CC.
GENAILLE is also charged with:
– Breach of conditions of a release order, s. 145(5)(a) CC; and
– Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, s. 91(2) CC.
Both MCARTHUR and GENAILLE made their first court appearances on these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday (today), August 29, 2022.
