A 46 year-old male is facing charges following an incident in which police officers deployed a CEW (Conducted Energy Weapons), commonly known as a Taser.
On Thursday, March 31st, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m. police were dispatched to N Devonshire Drive for a report of an intoxicated male threatening to assault other people within the household. Police arrived and were confronted by a male who refused to be taken into custody. The male suspect grabbed a long-handled roofing hammer and would not comply with police commands. The male was intoxicated, very agitated and confrontational with police. Police deployed a CEW which was effective in allowing police to gain control of the male safely. The male sustained minor injuries.
The police use of the CEW will be reviewed, as per policy, by the Regina Police Service Use of Force Committee, which reports uses of force on a quarterly basis to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
Upon further investigation, 46 year-old Terrance Todd BENJOE, of Regina, was charged with:
- Assault Peace Officer While Threatening to use a Weapon, s. 270.01(1)(a) CC; and
- Breach of Probation (keep the peace), s. 733.1(1) CC
BENJOE made his first court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. today: Friday, April 1, 2022.
