A 13 year-old youth is facing a charge of Uttering Threats, after Police investigation into a concerning online communication.
At approximately 9:55 a.m., Tuesday, March 29th, the School Resource Officer for an elementary school in the 3800 block of East Buckingham Drive, received a call from the school principal advising that a student had received an online message that appeared to indicate a possible threat and a warning. School authorities had already enacted their “Secure the Building” protocol* for school safety. Through investigation, a 13 year-old was identified as the author of the message and was safely taken into custody from their residence.
The 13 year-old cannot be identified in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth is charged with Uttering Threats, section 264.1(1)(a) CC. The youth will make their first court appearance on the charge in Youth Court on May 12, 2022.
* It is important to understand the terminology and actions taken by authorities. “Secure the Building”: Is a situation where it is believed a threat is currently outside the building, resulting in the decision to secure the school whereby all outside doors will be locked to secure the building. Each exterior door is to be monitored by designated school staff until Secure the Building mode has been lifted. Entry and exit of the building will be at the front doors only and are to be monitored by police and school administration. Regular interior school activities continue in a controlled manner.
