The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon, or CEW, commonly known as a taser, on Saturday, January 29, 2022 in the arrest of a 34 year-old Regina male. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At approximately 01:45 am on Saturday, January 29, 2022, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Elliott Street for a report of a male inside the residence threatening others with a knife. Initial information received indicated that the male was causing problems and scaring the residents while holding a knife and they wanted him removed. The officers received further information that the male was the subject of warrants.
When officers arrived, the male barricaded himself in a bedroom and refused to open the door and speak with the Police. After a lengthy time of trying to negotiate with the male, he attempted to flee out of a window so Officers entered the bedroom to prevent his escape. The male then held the knife to his throat and would not listen to commands to drop the knife. Police deployed a CEW which was effective in allowing them to gain control of the male safely. The male was initially transported to hospital by EMS for minor injuries and then released into police custody. Investigation into this incident is ongoing and charges against the subject male are pending.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – a provincial oversight body, independent of the Regina Police Service.
