Two adults have been charged in connection with the death of a two year-old girl. The child was originally transported to hospital on June 9, 2021, as a seriously-injured child, but passed away four days later. The death investigation is now a homicide case; the seventh homicide in Regina in 2021.
The death investigation was carried out by the Regina Children’s Justice Centre (police, social workers, medical and justice personnel), in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. As a result of the criminal investigation two adults: a female and male were arrested by the Regina Police Service on Wednesday July 14, 2021. Both have now been charged.
Twenty-six year-old Brittney Catherine Emma BURGHARDT, of Regina, is charged with Second-Degree Murder, section 235(1) of the Criminal Code. Twenty-four year-old Justin Noah Paul ANDERSON, of Regina, is charged with Accessory After the Fact to Murder, section 240 of the Criminal Code. Both BURGHARDT and ANDERSON are also charged with Forcible Confinement, section 279(2) of the Criminal Code.
BURGHARDT and ANDERSON made their first court appearances on these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. this morning (Thursday), July 15, 2021.
