Weapons Call at School Resolved Peacefully and Promptly

A firearm/weapons call at a Regina High School was brought to a peaceful conclusion (today) Wednesday, May 26, 2021.  A female young person will face a criminal charge as the result of the investigation into this event.

At approximately 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, patrol officers were dispatched to a high school in the 5200 block of Rochdale Boulevard, for a report that a student in the school had shown someone what appeared to be a firearm tucked into the waistband of her pants.  When patrol members and School Resource Officers arrived, the school administration had already enacted their lockdown protocol*.  The patrol members took the suspect safely into custody and seized the firearm which, upon close examination, was found to be a realistic-looking CO2 pellet gun.  With the suspect safely in custody and no other suspects outstanding, the School Resource Officers assisted by taking witness statements and helping the school administration to lift the lockdown in a safe and orderly manner.  Investigation into this event led to a single criminal charge against the female student.

The female young person cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.  She is charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, contrary to section 90 of the Criminal Code.  She will make her first appearance on this charge before Youth Court at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

*Use of consistent emergency protocols and terminology is critical to the success of the Regina School Emergency Preparedness Plan, developed collaboratively by the Regina Police Service and Regina School Boards.  Regina Schools regularly practice their emergency preparedness drills.  “Lockdown” – is a situation where it is believed a threat is currently inside the building and/or on school property, and/or the threat is attempting to gain access, and/or someone actively alarming or injuring another person, and/or anyone armed with a weapon.  All school occupants are secured in designated locked areas and regular school activities are stopped when the school is in “Lockdown” mode.
