Two males: ages 25 and 30, are facing charges in connection with a dangerous driving incident overnight in Regina.
It was just after midnight (approximately 12:27 a.m., when police attempted to pull over a vehicle in the area of 5th Avenue and Cameron Street. Police activated emergency lights and siren and the driver of the vehicle sped away at a high speed, making no attempt to pull over. Patrol units and unmarked cars were able to keep sight of the vehicle as it evaded, and eventually were in a position to safely deploy a spike belt. The vehicle came to stop in the area of Walden Crescent. Police found one male inside the vehicle, and a canine team apprehended a second male, believed to be the driver, hiding under a vehicle nearby. The driver was bitten by a police dog in the course of this arrest. He was taken to hospital for treatment and then transported to cells. The driver was found to be on two probation orders at the time of this offence. Both males were charged and held for court.
Twenty-five year-old Nickolaos James VELIKAS, of Regina, is charged with Flight From Peace Officer (evade), contrary to section 320.17 of the Criminal Code. In addition VELIKAS is charged with two counts of Breach of Probation, section 733.1(1) CC.
Thirty year-old Adriano Michael VECCHIOLI, of Regina, is charged with Fail to Comply with Conditions of Release [145(5)(a) CC].
Both VELIKAS and VECCHIOLI made their first appearances on these charges in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. today, Friday, January 22, 2021.
