A 27 year-old Regina male is facing weapons and theft charges after an alleged shoplifting incident iin the city’s east end yesterday (Sept. 23rd).
On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at approximately 8:40 p.m., police were dispatched to a retail business in the 1800 block of Victoria Avenue East for a report of a shoplifting and weapons offence. It was alleged that a male inside the store was shoplifting. Outside the building, in the course of an exchange with an employee, it’s alleged the male suspect pulled a knife and advanced on the employee who retreated and took refuge. Police arrived and did an area check but did not locate the suspect. They returned to speak with the victim who gave information as to the suspect’s last-seen location and direction of travel. At approximately 8:55 p.m., officers located a person matching the suspect description on the premises of a nearby business. The male was taken into custody. He was found to be the subject of a warrant for arrest. Further investigation led to charges against this individual in connection with the shoplifting and weapons incidents.
Twenty-seven year-old Jerry Joseph JR MAERTENS, of Regina, is charged with:
- Theft Under $5,000 [334(b) CC];
- Assault with a Weapon [267(a) CC];
- Carry Concealed Weapon [90 CC]; and
- Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to Public Peace [88 CC].
MAERTENS made his first court appearance on these charges before Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2020.
