The Regina Police Service is currently investigating numerous reports of PIN-pad thefts and PIN-pad tampering.
There have been 4 reports this week regarding PIN-pads that have been removed and replaced with altered units. All of the complaints have involved local Regina businesses. Investigators believe at least three males are responsible for distracting employees in these businesses and switching pin pads in order to collect data fraudulently.
From experience, police recognize that these types of crimes are often committed by suspects who travel from one urban centre to another, often just a few steps ahead of law enforcement.
Regina business owners are reminded to check their PIN-pads and other transaction equipment regularly for any signs of tampering. Ensure that employees are aware that suspects may use distraction techniques to create the opportunity for another suspect to switch PIN-pads. PIN-pads should be secured, tethered or handed to the customer by an employee. PIN-pads should never be left unsecured and unattended.
Consumers are advised to use Chip cards, and to avoid swiping a Chip card should the PIN-pad not recognize their card. Individual consumers should always check credit card and bank statements. If any fraudulent activity is noted, contact their financial institutions and the police.
