Officers located the vehicle and followed it for a short distance before it pulled over near 8th Avenue and Athol Street, at which time two occupants exited the vehicle. Both occupants were arrested. The second incident took place early Sunday morning (January 7, 2024). A member of the RPS Canine Unit was on patrol on North Albert Street when he observed a stolen vehicle that had evaded police both inside and outside of the city (RCMP) in days prior.
The officer observed the vehicle stopped outside of a business on Albert Street North before it drove out of town on Highway 6 North. Based on previous experience, officers did not engage with the suspect vehicle until it they saw it again, approximately 90 minutes later, parked outside a business near 9th Avenue North and Broad Street.
Officers could see the suspect driver inside the business. The suspect noticed the Canine officer and fled the business on foot, refusing to stop.
A Police Service Dog was used to apprehend the suspect a short distance away. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to hospital to be treated for injuries resulting from the dog bite sustained during the apprehension.
The other occupants of the stolen vehicle fled the scene in that vehicle, and the investigation into its whereabouts is ongoing.
