In the late hours of Thursday, May 18, 2023, police received a report of a male who was seen driving around with a firearm inside the vehicle. At approximately 5:40 a.m., members of the Canine Unit observed a male matching the suspect description in the passenger seat of a vehicle that was travelling in the 1500 block of Cameron Street. Police initiated a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver responded to police commands, exited the vehicle, and was taken into police custody without incident. The male passenger exited the vehicle but was uncooperative with police. After multiple verbal commands by police, he was taken into custody without further incident. In a search of the vehicle following arrest, officers located a firearm and ammunition. As a result:
Twenty-nine year-old Cody Frank CARDINAL, of Regina, has been charged with:
- Carrying Concealed Weapon [CC 90];
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm With Ammunition [CC 95 (1)(B)];
- Tampering With Serial Number of a Firearm [CC 108 (1)(A)];
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm [CC 91 (1)];
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition in a Motor Vehicle [CC 94 (1)(a)(ii)];
- Fail to Comply With Probation Order [CC 733.1 (1)];
- 2 X Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order [CC 117.01 (1)];
- Fail To Comply With Condition of a Release Order [CC 145 (5)(A)].
Thirty-one year-old Eddie Lee SANGWAIS, of Regina, has been charged with:
- Carrying Concealed Weapon [CC 90];
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm [CC 91 (1)];
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition in a Motor Vehicle [CC 94 (1)(a)(ii)];
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm With Ammunition [CC 95 (1)(B)];
- Tampering With Serial Number of a Firearm [CC 108 (1)(A)].
CARDINAL and SANGWAIS made their first court appearances on these charges in Provincial Court this afternoon (May 19, 2023) at 2:00 p.m.
