The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), commonly known as a Taser, this morning. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On Friday. May 12, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m, Patrol officers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance at a residence in the 2000 block of St. John Street. Shortly after officers attended, an adult male walked out of the residence; the male was holding a bladed weapon and was threatening self-harm. Patrol officers engaged in verbal dialogue with the male. The male ran toward police. Despite commands to stop, the male continued to approach police and an officer deployed a CEW. The male was taken into police custody and transported to hospital.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee, which is a committee within the Service. All CEW deployments are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission, which is an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
