On Friday February 25, 2022, a Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At approximately 1:50 a.m., police were dispatched to the 1100 block of 13th Avenue for a report of a female threatening self-harm with a knife. Police attended to a residence and located the female still holding the knife in a threatening manner and attempting to cut herself. The police perceived the immediate need to control the female, due to a high risk of death or serious bodily harm, prompting the deployment of the CEW. The female was safely taken into custody. She was transported to the Regina General Hospital for further medical treatment.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
Anyone who may have information that could assist with this investigation is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
