In order to protect the public, a Regina Police officer shot a dog last night (August 18th) resulting in the death of the animal.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, police were dispatched to the area of 4th Avenue and McIntyre Street for a report of an adult female who was behaving strangely. The female had a dog, which was described as a “medium-size brown pitbull”, on a leash. It was reported that the dog had attacked another dog, and was behaving aggressively: barking, growling, and lunging at people.
Police arrived and located the woman and dog in an alley in the 100 block of Albert Street North and then managed to transport both to her family member’s residence in the 1200 block of Rae Street. Officers requested an Animal Protection worker in order to assess the threat level of the animal. The Animal Protection worker decided that the dog should be seized, as it continued to behave aggressively. For reasons yet unknown, the female took the dog off-leash. The dog lunged at the Animal Protection worker, prompting one of the RPS officers to step toward the dog, in order to distract it. The dog then charged at the officer, who discharged one round from his sidearm, fatally wounding the animal.
Further investigation is required to determine the chain of events that led to this unfortunate outcome.
