The Regina Police Service is advising the public about a food delivery scam that has been reported to police. In recent days, police have received two similar reports. Information provided suggests that in both cases, a customer placed an order with a local pizza business. The pizza was delivered to the customer, who paid via debit or credit card. The delivery person seemed to have difficulties with the card and machine, but confirmed the transaction was successful. Later, both customers checked their bank accounts and reported to police that significant funds had been taken.
The Regina Police Service Financial Crimes Unit is investigating and it appears the “delivery people” have been acting fraudulently. It appears the individuals posing as delivery people are not associated with either the restaurants or a legitimate delivery service. Instead, the scammer somehow obtains delivery information from the business, collects the food order, and then poses as a delivery person for the customer.
To protect yourself as a customer:
- Ensure the delivery person at your door provides identification from the business you have ordered from.
- Be aware of how your credit card/debit card is being handled or used during a transaction.
- Check your bank accounts periodically to look for any unusual transactions or charges. If something is out of the ordinary, contact police.
To protect yourself as a business owner:
- Ensure anyone picking up food at your business provides proper identification and order confirmation.
- Ensure employees are clearly identified when delivering food orders.
