Most Saskatchewanians – especially those of a certain age – remember Joni Mitchell and the song, “Big Yellow Taxi”. Today, we are invoking lyrics from that famous, oft-imitated song to remind Regina drivers that it’s always worth the time and effort to lock your car and take your keys. Ready? Cue the music: “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone?”
Now that we’ve planted that ear-worm: think about how much you rely on your vehicle and how difficult it would be to lose that vehicle. Now think about how easy it is to use this fabulous three-step crime prevention routine every time you leave your vehicle:
- Remove all your valuables from view;
- Lock the doors; and
- Take your keys with you.
(Now, that could almost be a rap…)
Like most police services, we like statistics, but we don’t like seeing numbers in any crime category creeping up. Last year, the number of auto thefts was down from 2019. Already this year, a lot of the reported stolen vehicles were unlocked; were running; or had keys in them. We’d like to keep the stolen auto stats trending downward. In most instances, auto thefts are easily preventable; and maybe even more fun if you have a tune in your head. Think about “what you got” before it’s gone. Everyone can play a role in crime prevention.
