As we settle into the colder weather, the Regina Police Service is reminding the public to lock your vehicles. Over the last week (November 10 – November 17, 2020), RPS has recorded an increase in reports of both stolen vehicles and thefts of property from vehicles. In many of these cases, the vehicles were unlocked and also had the keys inside.
- Theft of Auto: 18
50% had the keys inside the vehicle or in the ignition.
- Theft from Auto: 32
45% of vehicles were entered through an unlocked door.
Getting into a cold car is not enjoyable – we understand. Letting your vehicle idle for a few minutes in your driveway or in a parking lot is tempting, however, it is not safe. It is only recommended to leave an unoccupied vehicle running to warm up if a remote starter is used.
- Do not leave your vehicle running with the keys in the ignition and watch from an inside window. This still leaves full opportunity for a suspect to enter and steal your vehicle before you can react.
- Do not leave your vehicle running with the keys in the ignition with the doors locked. Even if you have a spare set of keys inside with you, a determined suspect can still break the window to make entry.
Theft of auto and theft from auto are crimes of opportunity. Please do your part in helping to keep your property and our community safe by locking your vehicles and keeping your keys with you.
