The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon, or CEW, commonly known as a Taser.
On November 13, 2020 at approximately 22:50 hours a CEW was used during the arrest of a 36 year-old female. At approximately 22:10 hours, on November 13, 2020 police were called to a business in the 1100 block of Angus Street. The information received was that a woman was outside of the business and appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. The woman was yelling and screaming and causing disturbance. Upon police arrival the female was holding a syringe in her hand threatening to harm herself. Officers attempted to negotiate with the female directing her to drop the syringe. The female refused to follow police direction. After failed attempts to verbally deescalate the situation, a CEW was deployed and the female was taken into custody. The female was transported to hospital by EMS. At this time, no charges have been laid in this incident.
This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person. The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan
Police Commission – a provincial oversight body, independent of the Regina Police Service.
