A 17 year-old male has been ticketed under the Traffic Safety Act after a vehicle/pedestrian MVA over the weekend.
On Saturday, October 31st at approximately 7:25 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Athol Street for a report of a collision. Early information suggested a child had been hit by a vehicle while walking across the street. When police arrived, they located an injured 11 year-old female. She was transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. Collision investigators from the RPS Traffic Safety Unit also attended to the scene. Investigation revealed that the driver, a 17 year-old male, had been using his cell phone when he struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the street at a crosswalk.
The driver was issued two Summary Offence Ticket Information (SOTIs) as a result:
· Driving Without Due Care And Attention [Traffic Safety Act]
· Failing To Yield To A Pedestrian In An Intersection/Marked Crosswalk [Traffic Safety Act]
The name of the driver will not be released to the public, as he is under the age of 18. Also, the offences fall under the Traffic Safety Act and are not charges under the Criminal Code.
