Two adults: a male and a female, have been charged after a relatively routine traffic stop led to the discovery of what appeared to be a handgun in the vehicle.
On the evening of Monday, July 27, 2020, two RPS officers on patrol duty were checking license plates on moving traffic, checking for potential violations such as: unregistered vehicles or vehicles where the license plate doesn’t match the vehicle description. A comparison of one license plate, showed that the plate belonged to an unregistered vehicle. At approximately 7:30 p.m., the officers initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, in the alley of the 1100 block of Garnet Street. The male driver of the vehicle could not produce a valid license, registration or proof of ownership. As police asked him to step out of the vehicle in order to confirm his identity, a firearm was seen on the floor mat of the vehicle. In a search of the vehicle, officers also located several other gun parts, pipes and .22 calibre ammunition. The male was found to be the subject of a number of court-ordered conditions. A female passenger in the vehicle as found to be the subject of a warrant for assault and was also subject to conditions. Further investigation led to several charges against the two individuals.
Twenty-seven year-old Emile William SANGWAIS of the Grenfell District, and 33 year-old Krista Ashley Dawn CYR, of Regina, are jointly charged with:
- Transporting a prohibited firearm in a vehicle [86(2) CC];
- Possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace [88 CC];
- Carrying a concealed weapon [90 CC];
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized [92(1) CC];
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in motor vehicle [94(1)(a)(ii) CC];
- Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition [95(1)(a) CC];
In addition Krista CYR is charged with:
- Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition [117.01(1) CC].
In addition, Emile SANGWAIS is charged with:
- 3 x Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition [117.01(1) CC]; and
- Fail to comply with release order [145(5)(a) CC].
Both accused persons made their first court appearances on these charges for Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m., today (Tuesday), July 28, 2020.
