This Friday is Canada’s 149th birthday. The Regina Police Service is working with the City event staff to ensure the day is a safe and fun-filled day for all.
As the Canada Day weekend approaches, the Regina Police Service reminds the public that setting off firecrackers or fireworks within the City of Regina limits, at any time, is prohibited under Bylaw No. 2005-18, the Regina Fire Bylaw. The sale of fireworks within the city is also restricted to the day of, and ten days immediately preceding Canada Day, and is prohibited to any person under 18 years of age. The sale of firecrackers is prohibited year-round. The Regina Police Service also cautions the citizens of Regina that fireworks and firecrackers are dangerous and can cause serious harm or injury. (The fireworks display advertised as part of the planned Canada Day celebrations has been approved by permit and carried out by experienced operators.)
The penalty under Bylaw No. 2005-18 indicates that an individual contravening the bylaw is subject to a voluntary payment fine of $300.00.
The bylaw sets out strict rules for businesses storing and selling fireworks within the allowable periods. Among these provisions:
- Fireworks cannot be displayed in lots exceeding 25 kilograms.
- Fireworks must be in a display case or other suitable receptacle not accessible to the public, and dispensed only by the vendor or the vendor’s employees.
- A summary of the bylaw requirements must be displayed immediately adjacent to the fireworks.
- Fireworks cannot be stored where they are exposed to direct sunlight or excess heat, or in close proximity to flammable material.
While fireworks are meant to be observed, if you find yourself driving while the Canada Day fireworks are occurring, please continue your focus on the road. If you wish to enjoy the display, find a safe place to park away from major traffic throughways. Do not pull over on a traffic throughway such as a major road or highway. Electronic signage will be used where available to remind motorists not to stop for fireworks.
