On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at 11:25 hours, police were dispatched to the Department of National Defence on the 1600 block of Elphinstone Street for the report of a break and enter and theft. Information received was that property, including six simulation training rifles, was confirmed to be missing. Other stolen equipment includes training rounds, training magazines (the case that holds the training rounds), and two sets of binoculars. The last confirmed physical verification of the property occurred in March of 2020. The Regina Police Service Property Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing firearms in collaboration with Canadian Armed Forces Military Police. One of the firearms has recently been recovered by members of the RCMP in Lumsden.
While these firearms are modified versions of the C-7 rifle, nonoperational with real ammunition, they are intended to simulate appearance, feel, and function, making them very difficult to distinguish from an active firearm. Police remind the public that displaying any type of firearm in public, imitation or otherwise, will prompt an immediate response from police. Until police can confirm the ability of the weapon, it will be treated as if it’s a real firearm. And even if a “gun” turns out to be an imitation, serious criminal charges may result.
