The Regina Police Service will be increasing public education and enforcement to put the brakes on speeding and excess vehicle noise on Regina roadways.
Project SPEED (Spring Public Education & Enforcement Drive) will see members of the Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit, Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) and Patrol members increase traffic enforcement, provide education on rules of the road/vehicle standards, and reduce the number of dangerous driving occurrences in Regina.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the emergence of spring weather, the Regina Police Service has noticed an increase in speeding and excessive vehicle noise. These issues have been top-of-mind for Regina residents as well. Sgt. Mark Verbeek of the RPS Traffic Safety Unit says that in recent weeks, there has been a significant increase in traffic complaints from citizens to the Regina Police Service and the City of Regina.
“Our members have noticed it and residents have noticed it. Excessive speed and excessive vehicle noise on our roadways is problematic and it’s dangerous. The Regina Police Service is committed to sending a strong message to drivers who are not following laws and who are compromising public safety while behind the wheel,” explained Sgt. Verbeek.
Project SPEED will target all traffic offences on Regina roadways, but will focus mainly on:
-Speeding
-Excess vehicle noise
-Stunting/street racing
-Illegal vehicle modifications
The Project SPEED initiative will run throughout the month of June but residents can expect continued enforcement on these, and other traffic violations throughout the summer months.
