The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon, or CEW, commonly known as a taser. The incident occurred on May 22, 2020 resulting in the arrest of a 46 year-old Regina male who had in his possession a firearm. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On May 22, 2020 at approximately 19:22 hours, police attended to the 800 block of Grey Street in regards to a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they located the suspect brandishing a handgun. Officers attempted to gain control of the suspect by commanding him to drop the gun. When the suspect refused, a CEW was successfully deployed and the suspect was safely taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was assessed by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and was transported to detention. Investigation into this incident is ongoing.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – a provincial oversight body, independent of the Regina Police Service.
