The Regina Police Service Drug Unit (RDU) in conjunction with the Saskatoon Police Service Drug Unit completed a joint investigation into drug trafficking within the cities of Regina and Saskatoon. As a result of the investigation in the two cities, Saskatoon completed enforcement action within Saskatoon on May 20, 2020. The Regina Drug Unit completed enforcement in relation to the investigation in Regina, the following day: May 21, 2020.
As a result of the investigation in Regina, three males: 20 year-old Nuno-Miguel DESOUSA of Burnaby, BC, 41 year-old Shahid AZIZ of Regina, SK, and 43 year-old Christopher Charles LAFONTE of Regina, SK, were all charged in relation to the drug trafficking investigation. Each individual’s charges are as follows:
AZIZ and DESOUSA are jointly charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine) [5(2)CDSA];
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl) [5(2)CDSA]; and
- Possession of proceeds of crime over $5000 [355(A)CC].
DESOUSA also received the additional charges of:
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine) [5(2)CDSA]; and
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (Xanax) [5(2)CDSA].
Christopher LAFONTE
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl) [5(2)CDSA];
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine) [5(2)CDSA];
- Possession of proceeds of crime under $5000 [355(B)CC]; and
- Breach of Undertaking [145(4)(A)CC].
The following evidence was seized in Regina at the conclusion of the investigation:
- Approximately 500 grams of fentanyl
- 300 grams of cocaine
- 4500 grams of methamphetamine
- 200 grams of Xanax
- $9000.00 Canadian currency
All accused made their first court appearances in Provincial Court on May 22, 2020.
