On Friday, May 8, 2020, Regina Police Service members discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On Friday, May 8, 2020, at approximately 11:40 a.m., police were dispatched to Lorne Street and 11th Avenue for a report of a mischief in progress. Information received was that a male was smashing windows with a long piece of metal rebar.
Police arrived and found the male swinging the rebar. Police exited the vehicle and verbally challenged the male, who dropped the rebar. The male then picked it up again, and swung the rebar at police. Police deployed a CEW on the male, but it was ineffective. After swinging the rebar at police again, the male hit the police vehicle, breaking the windshield. As the male swung again, hitting the vehicle a second time, police deployed a CEW on the male, but it was ineffective. The male then dropped the rebar and entered the police vehicle and attempted to put the vehicle in gear. A CEW was again deployed, with limited effectiveness. A struggle between the male and police ensued, and the male was removed from the police vehicle. Police deployed a CEW on the male outside of the vehicle with successful results, and were able to place him in handcuffs. EMS was called to examine the male, who had sustained physical injuries described as minor.
An adult male is charged with:
- 14 X Mischief [CC 430(1)(A)];
- Attempt theft of motor vehicle [CC 333.1(1)]; and
- Assault peace officer with a weapon [CC 270.01(1)(A)].
The accused male makes his first appearance in Provincial Court on these charges on May 11, 2020 at 9:30a.m.
