The Regina Police Service is once again warning Regina residents about the risks of giving personal or financial information out over the phone.
In the last 24 hours, The Regina Police Service Communications Centre has received an overwhelming number of calls from concerned residents who advise they have been contacted by someone claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada. In many of those phone conversations reported to RPS, the caller says that the recipient is under investigation and he or she must cooperate by offering up their personal information, including their Social Insurance Number. The Canada Revenue Agency advises that they do not conduct business in this way and invite people to contact them directly if they have questions about their own accounts.
The Regina Police Service advises the public to refrain from giving out your SIN or other personal and financial information over the phone. If you receive such a call, do not be intimidated into giving personal information. End the call and, if you want reassurance, contact the real Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada to ask if you are the subject of any sort of audit or investigation. If you have already turned over your Social Insurance Number to a caller, you are asked to come to the Front Desk of the Regina Police Service to make a report.
