A 24 year-old Regina male is facing numerous charges, including a charge of first degree murder, after a series of incidents in May 2019. The murder charge is in relation to the murder of 21 year-old Isaiah Terrel AKACHUK, of Regina.
The charges are in relation to the following incidents:
On Saturday, May 18, 2019, at approximately 12:04 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of 7th Avenue and Garnet Street in Regina. Information received in the call indicated a male was lying on the sidewalk. Police officers arrived and started emergency first-aid on the victim until EMS arrived on scene. The male, later identified as Isaiah AKACHUK, was transported to hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Then at approximately 12:11 a.m., May 18, 2019, police were dispatched to the area of Dewdney Avenue and Garnet Street for what was initially reported as an incident of aggressive driving and a possible discharge of a firearm. A suspect got out of a vehicle, and discharged a firearm at a vehicle occupied by two people, one of which was struck by the discharge. Police and EMS attended to the area and located a 29 year-old female who had sustained an apparent gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to hospital for treatment of injuries described as serious.
Following these incidents, at approximately 12:33 a.m., May 18, 2019, patrol members were dispatched to a business in the 900 block of Victoria Avenue for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. Three young people, ages 15, 16 and 17, had just come out of the business when a vehicle pulled up and one of the occupants of the vehicle pointed what appeared to be a firearm at one of the victims. The suspects demanded personal property from the victims and then fled in the vehicle.
On Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at approximately 10:40 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of 14th Avenue and Reynolds Street. for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. A victim was walking in the area when a vehicle pulled up beside him. An occupant of the truck pointed what appeared to be a firearm, and demanded personal property.
Following this, at approximately 10:51 p.m., May 21, 2019, police were dispatched to hospital for a report of a 29 year-old male, who had sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Through investigation into this shooting incident, police determined the shooting had just taken place in the 1900 block of Montreal Street.
The RPS Communications Centre then received a call from an individual, reporting a firearm had been discharged from a grey truck at 7th Avenue and Retallack Street, at approximately 10:53 p.m., May 21, 2019. There is no known injury associated to this event.
At approximately 11:06 p.m., May 21, 2019, police were again dispatched to the area of 2nd Avenue and Garnet Street for a report of a 38 year-old male who had also sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Injuries to this victim were deemed to be non-life-threatening.
Then at approximately 11:08 p.m., May 21, 2019, police were dispatched to the area of 3rd Avenue and Athol Street for a report of 41 year-old male who had sustained apparent gunshot injuries. A suspect pointed a firearm at the victim and discharged it, striking him. Injuries to this victim were deemed to be serious, but non-life-threatening.
Investigation into these incidents led to the arrests of a 24 year-old male for homicide and numerous attempt murder charges, and a 26 year-old male for firearm charges, both of which were the subjects of previous news releases. A 27 year-old Regina male has now also been arrested and charged.
Twenty-seven year-old Derrick Ewen PASAP, of Regina, is charged with:
- First degree murder [235(1) CC];
- 2 X Possession of Firearm/Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition [117.01(1) CC];
- 2 X Breach of Recognizance [811 CC]
- 2 X Armed robbery using a firearm [344(1)(A.1) CC];
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000 (truck) [355(A) CC];
- 7 x Attempt to commit murder using a firearm [239(1)(A.1) CC];
- Armed robbery using a firearm [344(1)(A.1) CC]; and
- Pointing a firearm [87 CC].
PASAP is scheduled to make his first appearance on these charges in Provincial Court today, July 24, 2019, at 2:00 p.m.
