Four young people were taken into police custody this evening as the result of a police investigation that involved Patrol members as well as members of the Street Crimes Unit in the 100 block of Massey Road. The arrests were made without injury to the suspects, members of the public or Police.
At approximately 7:25 p.m. on Friday, March 08, 2019, police received a report of a group of males who were in possession of weapons believed to be a firearm and a knife at a high school in the 100 block of Massey Road. A wrestling competition was taking place at the high school which meant a large congregation of people present at the school. In this situation, the subject males were in a ‘non-threatening’ state, meaning there was no altercation or disturbance in progress that led to police being called. In such situations, police and school staff use that ‘non-threatening’ or quiet state to enact a weapons protocol designed to prevent an escalation of the situation.
Four young people were ultimately taken into custody without incident. The weapons were located and confirmed to be a pellet gun and two hunting knives. Initial investigation into this incident supports weapons charges against the youth taken into custody. The charged youth cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The investigation is ongoing and there are no other details available for release at this time. Activities at the high school continued on as planned following the incident.
