‘Tis the season, Folks! Think twice before leaving your vehicle running while unattended. The Regina Police is once again advising motorists to not leave keys in vehicles. You’ve got the power.
From December 4, 2018 to December 11, 2018, Regina Police received 40 reports of stolen autos. Of the 40 stolen autos, 55% involved keys left in the vehicle. A vehicle left running, with no one around, is an easy opportunity for a theft. Spend the holiday season enjoying time with friends and family, instead of entering police reports, recovering your vehicle or replacing it entirely. Mindful crime prevention practices can prevent the stress and inconvenience of dealing with a stolen vehicle.
Another concerning trend of note is that 25% of the stolen autos from the past week were Honda Civics and Ford Escapes. Many of these thefts were committed with the use of altered keys. Use of a steering wheel locking device can help prevent theft of autos where altered keys are being used. Always lock your doors and remove all spare keys from your vehicles to prevent them being altered to commit further auto thefts. If you haven’t finished your Christmas list yet, ask Santa for a steering wheel locking device…and then use it every time you leave your car.
Report suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to police, by calling 306-777-6500. If you see a crime in progress, or in an emergency, call 9-1-1; keep yourself safe, but try to get a description of suspects or suspect vehicles.
