A 29 year-old male and 26 year-old female are in police custody, believed to be involved in a series of criminal incidents last night. These incidents began in Regina, but attempts to apprehend the suspects took this case out of the city and into rural Saskatchewan, involving the RCMP, assisted by RPS. In the end, the suspects were apprehended on a farm near Balgonie, after 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2018. Details of the charges against the two are yet to be announced and will involve charges laid by both the RCMP and Regina Police Service.
The Regina Police Service involvement with these suspects began the evening of Wednesday, December 5, 2018. At approximately 8:04 p.m., a patrol member was at the Regina General Hospital on an unrelated call for service when he saw a white Ford truck travelling at a high rate of speed. Just moments earlier another police unit radioed that officers had tried to initiate a traffic stop on a white Ford truck. As the officer was walking from the doors he heard people yelling that a pedestrian had been struck by the truck. By this time the suspect truck was fleeing northbound on Toronto Street. The officer and medical personnel went to the pedestrian, who was later identified as a 72 year-old male who had been crossing the street. He was taken for treatment of his injuries, which have been described as serious but not life-threatening.
As police worked through this investigation, they received information that the suspect vehicle was a stolen truck, taken from a garage in south Regina at about 6:35 p.m. The officer also learned the same vehicle is believed to have been involved in a collision with a traffic sign at 13th and Broad Street at 7:56 p.m. It’s believed that, as the truck was fleeing that scene, the collision with the pedestrian occurred near the hospital. By approximately 9:20 p.m., members of the Regina Police Street Crimes Unit located the Ford F250 truck believed to have been involved in the events earlier in the evening. The truck was in the area of Rae Street and 2nd Avenue North. The male driver picked up a female. At one point, in the events that followed, the male suspect racked and pointed a shotgun at one officer. Both suspects were able to flee and left the city heading east. At that time Regina Police communications advised the RCMP. Events followed that resulted, eventually, in the arrest of the two suspects. As these matters occurred outside the city, the following information was provided by RCMP F-Division Media Relations:
- According to RCMP, The stolen vehicle was then involved in an incident at a residence on the Pasqua First Nation where an adult male was assaulted with a firearm in his own home. A second vehicle was stolen from that residence and the two stolen trucks headed south driven by the suspect male and female. The first vehicle that was stolen from Regina was abandoned on the Pasqua First Nation. The vehicle stolen from the Pasqua First Nation was located driving on the Muscowpetung First Nation by RCMP and a pursuit was initiated, but soon called off as the vehicle entered the town of Edenwold. A second pursuit of the stolen truck was started just south of Edenwold and ended when the vehicle ran out of gas near Balgonie on Hwy 46. The male suspect fled the stolen truck and the female passenger was arrested at the scene. The male was tracked by a Police Dog from the Regina Police Service to a nearby farm yard where they were joined by RCMP members and RCMP Police dog service. The suspect attempted to use a large skid steer to assault the members trying to arrest him. A Conducted Energy Device (CEW) and OC spray were deployed and the suspect was taken into custody.
Both suspects, a 29 year-old male and 26 year-old female will face numerous charges. Details will follow from both the Regina Police Service and the RCMP when this information can be made public.
