On October 17, 2018, cannabis becomes legal in Canada. The Regina Police Service is trained, and continues to train, in preparation for these new laws. We ask members of the public who plan to enjoy cannabis to do so legally and responsibly.
As of October 17, 2018, under provincial law in Saskatchewan, a person over 19 can possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis. However, this cannabis cannot be consumed in a public setting. Only licensed sale of cannabis is now legal, and all unlicensed sale of cannabis remains an offense.
Impaired driving is a major concern, and police are prepared to respond to impaired driving. Substances that alter one’s ability to drive must be consumed responsibly. The Regina Police Service has nearly 100 officers trained in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) effective in stopping impaired drivers, drunk, high, or otherwise impaired. The Regina Police Service also currently has 11 members trained as Drug Recognition Experts, most of whom are assigned to frontline duties and available to assist police officers dealing with impaired drivers.
