A 28 year-old Regina male is facing charges after an incident on Saturday, July 14, 2018 in which a Regina Police Service member discharged a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At approximately 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2018, the RPS Communications Centre received a call that a male was causing problems at a residence in the 400 block of Alexandra Street. Police were responding to a domestic related investigation and located the male outside of the residence. The officers attempted to calm the male and gain compliance verbally, but the male ignored their efforts. The male then threw an object at the officers present and became physically combative with the officers. One of the officers present deployed a CEW. The male was safely taken into custody. As the result of the investigation, the male was arrested and charged.
Twenty-eight year-old Joshua LAVALLEE, is charged with:
- Assaulting a Peace Officer [270 (1)(a) CC];
- Obstruction [129 (a) CC].
LAVALLEE was held for court on July 16, 2018.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee with the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
